Getting great coffee at home is simple with the right ingredients! To complete this How-To you will need: Fresh beans Grinder Cold water Coffeemaker Milk Flavored syrup Liqueur Step 1: Decide on a grind Figure out what grind your coffeemaker requires. Cone-shaped filters require a fine grind, while basket-shaped filters take a coarser grind. Step 2: Grind beans Grind the coffee beans. Pulse for 10 to 15 seconds for a medium grind, and 15 to 20 seconds for a fine grind. Tip: When using a blade grinder, pulse the blade and shake or tap the grinder to achieve a uniform grind. Step 3: Measure grounds Measure two rounded tablespoons for each six ounces of water. Step 4: Measure water Add cold, filtered water to the coffeemaker's basin and close the lid. Step 5: Brew coffee Start the coffeemaker and enjoy the aroma as the coffee brews. Tip: Resist the temptation to sneak a cup before the coffee is finished brewing. The flavor won't be balanced until the brewing cycle is complete. Step 6: Serve Serve the coffee immediately. Well-made ...

Make it yourself water filter

This video is one that I sent to Drak (NCHiker1970) to show him how I've been using a Brita filter to sweeten the water I've treated with Clorox or the remove the "flat" taste you get from boiling water on the trail. This filter will NOT remove harmful bacteria and/or viruses. The water needs to be treated before running it through a filter like this. Although this filter might not be good for a Gram-weenie I think it is something fairly cheap (should be under $5), pretty hardy and can be easily made by just about anyone. Parts needed to make this: 2" O-ring 2" PVC Coupler 2" PVC pipe 4 or 5 inches long or longer (your choice) 2" PVC pipe 3/8" long Weight of this rig (with new dry Brita filter): 265g or 9.30 oz or .584 lb Like I said, not a Gram-weenie item. I look forward to hearing what others think of this. Be sure to check Drak's video on his filter. Being a coffee drinker he came up with an even cheaper and lighter way to do the same thing.

How to Make Ammonium Nitrate

In this video we make ammonium nitrate from various off-the-shelf chemicals. Note: This is not cheaper than buying it directly, once again our objective is to explore the chemistry. Warning: The chemicals are corrosive and ammonia has a horrible smell, work outside or in a fumehood and wear gloves. First get 138 grams of sodium bisulfate and add just enough water to dissolve it, usually 300mL. Then get one mole equivalent of a pure nitrate salt. Some common salts include: Sodium nitrate: 85 grams. Potassium nitrate: 101 grams. Calcium nitrate: 118 grams (if using tetrahydrate) Dissolve the nitrate in a minimum of water, then mix the two solutions together. Neutralize the mixture with ammonia (using a pH meter to determine the endpoint). Filter the mixture to get rid of any insoluble materials if needed, then boil until sodium sulfate begins to precipitate. Then cool the mixture to 0 Celsius and filter. Dry the filtrate to obtain ammonium nitrate mixed with some leftover metal sulfates. For higher purity the solids can be mixed with 500mL of methanol which selectively dissolves ammonium nitrate. Filter again and evaporate the filtrate to obtain pure ammonium nitrate.
